The central objective of the Somerset Art Gallery Trust is the establishment of a major public art gallery for Somerset, with Taunton as the ideal location.
The trust acts through partnerships with other organisations and individuals and we have an increasingly influential body of supporters working towards the main objective.
The task is set out in a Statement of Purpose, endorsed by members at the annual general meeting on 21 March 2006. It now is incorporated into our leaflet Making the Case.
We are aware that achieving this goal will take a long time. But we have the patience to wait, believing that our time will come.
In the meantime we will continue to recruit members and to support existing ones, for instance by providing opportunities and activities for them. This website is an important step forward and will help our cause and our case to become widely known.
We understand that other areas of Somerset , such as Langport, are also pursuing exciting projects for the visual arts. There are schemes that may well be up and running much sooner than the major gallery envisaged by the Trust.
We welcome that and all additional opportunities for the general public to enjoy the visual arts and for those who make art to flourish. It is in everyone's interest, we argue, to have an healthy and inspiring visual arts scene in Somerset.
We see our own aspirations and activity as complementing such ventures, not only in the near future but long after the county's gallery and centre for the visual arts has come into being. Our gallery could be a focal point, a centre where the best or most interesting of such work is shown.
